We drive alongside the lake. We cross it. We meet friends for dinner beside it. And yet it’s surprisingly easy to live only a few miles from Lake Conroe without ever really making the water part of family life.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary’s mission includes recreational boating safety, and here on Lake Conroe, Flotilla 6-9 works to help recreational boaters become safer, more knowledgeable and more confident on the water.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

The classes aren’t simply about satisfying a requirement or earning a certificate.<\/p>

They’re about understanding the environment you’re entering.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Navigation rules. Markers. Life jackets. Emergency equipment. Safe operation. What different boats require. What to do when something doesn’t go according to plan.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

For adults, it’s knowledge that builds confidence.<\/p>

For children, it can begin to turn boating from something they simply do with their parents<\/em> into something they understand and participate in.<\/p>

And that’s where it becomes interesting as a family experience.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Learn a few knots together. Understand why certain equipment is aboard. Talk about who is responsible for what. Let everyone become a little more capable.<\/p>

Suddenly, boating isn’t simply entertainment.<\/p>

It’s a skill you’re developing together.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Have your boat checked \u2014 before you need to know<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

If you already own a boat, personal watercraft or paddlecraft, there’s another remarkably simple resource available: a Vessel Safety Check.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Volunteer vessel examiners from the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary can examine recreational vessels and help owners determine whether they have the appropriate safety equipment aboard.<\/p>

The service is free.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

And importantly, this isn’t law enforcement arriving to look for something wrong.<\/p>

If an examiner identifies something missing or something that needs attention, the purpose is to explain it and help the owner correct it. There’s no citation and no report sent to law enforcement.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Think of it instead as having a knowledgeable second set of eyes look over the vessel before the day comes when you actually need that life jacket, fire extinguisher, navigation light or other piece of safety equipment to work.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

It’s difficult to think of much downside to knowing more about the boat you’re putting your family aboard.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

One of the misconceptions surrounding life on the water is that participation begins with ownership.<\/p>

It doesn’t.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

A boat is a significant commitment. There is the purchase itself, but also storage, maintenance, insurance, fuel, cleaning and everything else that accompanies ownership.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

For a family simply wanting to experience more of Lake Conroe, none of that needs to be the starting point.<\/p>

Along Highway 105, April Plaza Marina offers a much simpler entry into the water.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

The marina rents pontoon boats and Sea-Doos, provides a public boat launch and fuel, and offers the everyday services you’d expect from a working marina.<\/p>

It’s not a luxury resort.<\/p>

And it doesn’t need to be.<\/p>

What makes April Plaza interesting to us is its usefulness.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

It’s somewhere a family can turn the idea of \u201cwe should spend more time on the lake\u201d<\/em> into something they can actually do.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Rent a pontoon for an afternoon. Pack something to eat. Bring the family. Learn the boat. Get comfortable operating it. Explore a part of Lake Conroe you’ve previously only seen from the shore.<\/p>

You don’t need to begin by buying your way into a lifestyle.<\/p>

You can begin by experiencing it.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

A marina that makes room for safety<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

There’s another reason April Plaza Marina deserves some recognition.<\/p>

The marina has been supportive of the recreational-boating-safety work of U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 6-9, including allowing boating-safety and class information to be displayed and encouraging boaters to take advantage of Vessel Safety Checks.<\/p>

April Plaza has also been willing to make its own rental fleet available for Auxiliary safety examinations.<\/p>

We think that matters.<\/p>

A Vessel Safety Check doesn’t guarantee that nothing can go wrong on the water, and it shouldn’t be presented that way.<\/p>

What it does demonstrate is a willingness to invite another set of trained eyes to look at the safety equipment aboard a vessel.<\/p>

For a business putting families onto rental boats, that’s the kind of attitude toward recreational boating we’d like to encourage.<\/p>

Not because safety needs to dominate the experience.<\/p>

Quite the opposite.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Being better prepared allows you to enjoy the experience with greater confidence.\nMake the lake the destination\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Once you’ve begun thinking this way, an ordinary weekend \u2014 or a few days during the fall school break \u2014 can become something considerably more memorable.<\/p>

Take the boating-safety class together.<\/p>

Arrange a Vessel Safety Check if you own something that goes on the water.<\/p>

Rent a boat if you don’t.<\/p>

Then actually use the lake.<\/p>

Explore.<\/p>

Perhaps head toward Waterpoint and spend some time walking beside the marina. Stop somewhere for lunch. Try somewhere you haven’t been before. Take the boat out again another afternoon. Learn where the different parts of the lake lead.<\/p>

Let the children begin recognizing landmarks from the water rather than only from the road.<\/p>

And don’t make every minute an activity.<\/p>

Find somewhere quiet. Turn the engine off. Sit for a while.<\/p>

Talk.<\/p>

Look around.<\/p>

That’s part of it too.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

For families around Montgomery County, Lake Conroe provides a rather good answer.<\/p>

You could spend part of the fall learning to become more knowledgeable boaters, part of it actually exploring the lake and the rest enjoying the places that have grown up around it.<\/p>

No elaborate itinerary.<\/p>

No requirement to own a boat or waterfront property.<\/p>

Just a deliberate decision to experience where you live differently.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

There can be just as much aspiration in becoming knowledgeable, capable and confident.<\/p>

Knowing how to operate a boat responsibly.<\/p>

Understanding the water.<\/p>

Knowing what equipment should be aboard.<\/p>

Being the person who checks the life jackets before leaving the dock.<\/p>

Being someone your friends feel comfortable putting their children on a boat with because they know you take that responsibility seriously.<\/p>

And then, having done all of that, knowing how to stop thinking about safety for a while and simply enjoy the afternoon.<\/p>
